How to Simulate GPS Movement on iPhone (Drive, Walk or Cycle a Route)

How to make your iPhone move along a route - not just teleport - with realistic speeds, stops and natural GPS drift. No jailbreak needed.

Teleporting your iPhone to a single spot is easy. Making it move - along roads, at a believable speed, stopping where a real person would - is the hard part, and it's what separates a convincing location from an obvious fake.

Why movement matters

A phone that sits perfectly still on one coordinate for hours doesn't look like a person. Neither does one that slides across the map in a straight line at a constant 60 km/h, through buildings. Real movement has:

  • Acceleration and braking - nobody goes from 0 to 50 instantly.
  • Junctions and traffic lights - drivers stop, then pull away.
  • Speed limits - you don't cruise at 90 through a town centre.
  • Drift - real GPS wobbles by a few metres even when you stand still.

Ways to simulate a route on iPhone

GPX files with developer tools

Developers can feed a GPX file (a list of coordinates with timestamps) to Xcode to play back a route on a connected iPhone. It works, but you have to create the file yourself and keep a Mac attached. More in our GPX guide.

Joysticks

Some tools add an on-screen joystick so you can "walk" by steering. Mirrage has one too - handy for small adjustments - but steering a whole journey by thumb is tiring.

Route simulation (the easy way)

Mirrage plans the route for you on real roads and moves your iPhone along it:

  1. Search for where you want to go and tap Journey.
  2. Choose Drive, Cycle or Walk. Add stops along the way if you like.
  3. Tap Go. Your phone travels the route at a realistic speed - slowing for corners and junctions, keeping to speed limits from OpenStreetMap, and pausing at lights when driving.

You can pause, resume or stop at any time, and the map follows with a tilted, heading-up camera so you can watch the trip like a sat-nav.

Try it in your browser

The live demo on our homepage runs a miniature version of the same engine. Switch between Walk, Cycle and Drive mid-trip and watch the speed change.

Tips for natural-looking routes

  • Pick the right mode. Walking speed is about 4-5 km/h; cycling 15-20 km/h.
  • Don't start a long trip from an impossible place. Begin near where you "were" last.
  • Use Wander when you arrive. Instead of freezing on one point, let your location drift around the destination.
  • Import your own GPX if you need an exact path - for example a running route.

FAQ

Can I make my iPhone location move automatically?

Yes. Route simulation in Mirrage moves your location along real roads at a realistic speed, without you steering.

Does simulated movement work in the background?

Yes. Mirrage keeps the trip running while you use other apps. If iOS restarts the phone, your real location returns and you can start again.

Can I simulate walking for step-count or fitness apps?

Step counts come from the phone's motion sensors, not GPS, so simulated GPS movement doesn't add steps. And many fitness challenges forbid simulated activity.

Does it need a jailbreak?

No. Mirrage uses Apple's developer location feature on iOS 17.4 and later.
